Kyle W. writes to ask about calling, rattling and using hot doe urine during early January hunts in Southeast Pennsylvania.
Keep in mind, Kyle, that does come into estrus in mid-October, and then if they aren't bred, they come into estrus around 28 days later in November (in your area the peak rut is between November 10-18).
Some doe fawns, and the few adult does that haven't been bred, will keep coming into estrus every 28 days in December and a few also will do so in January. So, hot doe urine may work well.
Now, what about grunt calling? I use a low intensity grunt call all the time, rut or no rut. I've called in bucks at all times of the fall season with grunt calls. Also, the new Can doe estrus call from Primos has worked for me at various times in the fall and winter. So, I'm never afraid to call deer. They may not always respond, but you won't scare them away either.
The best strategy is to use a call (grunt or can doe estrus call) when you see a buck and that buck is not coming toward you. Once he starts your way, be silent. If he moves away, call again.
As far as rattling. Rattling works best when the buck to doe ratio is equal or nearly equal. Here again, rattling can work in the late season. Early morning is the best time to rattle.
Good luck and dress warm!
