Own a classic communicator that kept forward troops in touch with the brass. The U.S. Army EE-8 Field Telephone was used by the Signal Corps before World War II through the Vietnam War. The portable Field Phone functioned on either "Local" battery using a hand-cranked generator to reach another phone, or "Common" battery using a hook switch to signal a central office. The original was housed in a leather case with a leather strap. That didn't hold up in the Pacific, so later models used canvas and a web strap.
