As the old alliances of World War II crumbled, new Cold War intrigues led to the creation of both NATO and Warsaw Pact military alliances. The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia went a third way: under the charismatic leadership of Josip Broz Tito, the nation maintained its independence while global superpowers maneuvered outside its borders.
