Goodyear Welt Construction: the Best Way to Build a Boot.

So how does it work? In short, a firm strip of leather (called the welt) is stitched to the leather upper, forming a flexible yet durable one-piece upper unit. The welt acts as a sort of “anchor layer” for the outsole, which is then stitched to the upper unit.

The finished product has two rows of stitching - one that holds the upper and welt together (typically inside the boot), and another that holds the welt to the outsole (that’s the one you see around the perimeter of the outsole). Goodyear welt construction provides solid footing, flexibility, and allows the outsole to be replaced, effectively lengthening the life of the boot. Which means these are in it for the long haul, with comfort and support.
