Hungarian Military Surplus Canteen, Olive Drab Green, 2 Pack, Used is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Pat D from Neat and cheap little canteens but may need some work. These are nifty little canteen. They are an interesting shape which are designed to fit inside the German style mess kit and have really nice grippy caps that screw on and off easily with big openings that can be filled with ice. The cap held on with a spiral ring is quite interesting and unique design that I haven't seen on any other military canteen and the clip is a super convenient way to attach it to stuff. They aren't actually painted but coated in a green plastic, which the Hungarians like to do with their equipment, it gives them a good grip feel but unfortunately the coating has cracked and started to break off on one of them. One of them was missing a ring and clip, which was easily replaced. One of the rubber gaskets in the cap had rotted and broken down so I also had to replace it with one cut from sheet rubber. Probably the worst thing about them was that the aluminum is of very poor quality and was making the water very cloudy and undrinkable. I fixed this by warming them up in the oven and lining them with melted bee's wax (which I recommend with any old aluminum canteen) and are now totally usable.Make sure when you get them, after washing, to leave water in them for a day or two and to check the clarity of the water in a glass. I kind of expect that when you buy old surplus that it might need some work so I don't mind doing some modifications to the stuff I buy, as I am a pretty crafty person myself. So the overall poor quality doesn't bother me. You get what you pay for.
