Designed by Heinrich Vollmer and used extensively by Axis countries in WWII, the MP-40 was an open-bolt, blowback-operated SMG chambered in 9mm with only one choice of firing mode: full-auto. Its 500 rds./min. rate of fire was relatively low for an SMG, but a number of novel features made it a favorite among the infantryman who used it. It was the first SMG to have a forward-folding metal stock, and it featured a bakelite support bar under the barrel for steadying the weapon when firing over the side of an APC.
