The infamous tri-color Flag of the German Democratic Republic. Proudly depicts a hammer and compass, surrounded by a ring of rye. These symbols characterized the 3 pillars of East German society: labor, intelligentsia, and agriculture. After decades of brutal repression against its own citizens, in 1989 the GDR government unexpectedly opened its borders and allowed free movement between East and West Germany. The reunification of the two countries soon followed, leaving this Flag as a must-have display item for any Cold War historian.
