Rated 2 out of 5 by from Rusty Ammo Cans. I've ordered used ammo cans before from Sportsman's Guide before and they've been pretty good. But this last order I received , rusty, hard to open ammo cans. I know their used but their usually in better shape than these. Being a member I guess doesn't get you better hand picked items.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Reasonable Condition While the can I received did not look like the picture, lit was in reasonable condition. It had a few dents which did not affect fit form or function. It was dirty but cleaned up. It now is the home of about 400 surplus 30-06.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from GOOD PRICE - PLAN ON PAINTING These must be stored outside at sportsman, they all came rusty ... one actually had a 1/2 cup water in it. One of four was missing front handle. I painted all four with Rustoleum Hammered Brown $ 5.99 if you never used this it covers a multitude of sins (inclueding rust) now I can use them for safer in house storage of my extra ammo.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fairly Severe Rust on Handle & top Covered up by Olive Drab Paint These seem to be getting worse and worse; either a bad batch or SG is scraping the bottom of the barrel. I keep finding more uses for the original strong metal boxes; the plastic substitutes just do not seal out water and can't carry a load of ammo. I've probably bought over half a dozen over the last few years. The one before this had some rust problems that were beyond surface rust and into the joints/seams of the bottom of the box. This one had been quickly surface spray painted on the inside and along the whole top and hinge area to cover the rust, and underneath the handle to hide it. The handle was about double or more the thickness of all the other ones I own--and it was 'soft..' Severe rust underneath had been covered up by spray painting it. I hope it doesn't break out to severely later. I don't know how to get the handle off to grind it down to metal, And to build it back up with epoxy. The box itself had some deeper than surface rust on the botto near the tack welds where the sides are bent over to be attached to the bottom. Not bad--but the handle was. These seem to be declining in quality, or SG is recycling returns possibly. This one should not have been sold to a loyal customer--maybe sold as a 'second' at clearance, but not represented as "good" quality used that 'might' have some "minor surface rust." Thumb has gone from clearly up a couple of years ago, to horizontal with question mark, to down. Not a complete reject, but I sure wouldn't recommend these anymore. I'd rather go to a surplus store and look at what I'm getting or choose my own. I don't now who covered up the rust--it was subtle spraying--inside and top handle and top near hinges--but kept the original yellow paint on sides untouched. Maybe their supplier did it?? Not up the SG quality on these that I used to count on. I wonder if the handle will hold up if it box is filled with heavy load of 45 auto pistol ammo for example. Quality control is needed but lacking, as is inspection before sending out. This lowers my opinion of SG--it is not only not up to standard, it is below it. And I am a bit surprised and disappointed at that.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dirty and Rust Bought two Ammo cans. They were dirty and had rust on them. Will not buy Ammo cans again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I'm use to a little rust. This can had more than a little. Steel wool cleaned it up though and a bit of lubrication helped. Seal was good. Free ship made it viable.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Dirty but still serviceable. It was so dirty and dusty when I unpacked it, it looked like it had come back from Iraq without even being wiped off. Once I wiped it down it looked OK. The gasket seems to be sealing good and the latch works fine so I got what I paid for.
