Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have use my gen-8 now for one season. It has met all of my expectations. I have only begun to use a few of it's many of it's many capabilities. I hope to do some other types of fishing nest year to use some of the other functions. Love the large screen. Think I still like the buttons vs the touch screen.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great. In salt water. Fishing I bought the hds-8 gen 2 a year ago and love it. Some of my friends have different brands and they are not nearly as user friendly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from nice rig I bought my HDS-8 a year and a half ago and have had two summers with it on one of the deepest "mean depth" lakes in Maine. I am starting to like it. I have had a difficult time learning to use it. So far, it is working well. If it lasts 7 or 8 years, I will buy another for sure.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good but latest upgrades is poor I'm was overall very pleased with this unit from the beginning (5 star). Best resolution I've seen, great sonar with a Airmar P66 transducer, fast and reliable.Unfortunately has the updates been slowing down the unit remarkable and maked it unstable. (1 star)With latest update 3.0 do the unit reboot up 'til 5 times before it works and the very feature I wanted "AutoRouting for Navionics" doesn't work, it tries to go over land on my Navionics Platinum+ XL3. When I change from different screen setups does the unti need up to 10 seconds for the change. I have of course reinstalled the upgrade etc...I would really like to see ver3.5 to be fast, reliable and with features that works, then it once more can be the really great product I once bought!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Ok, but has issues When in rough water unit will turn off by itself when jarred by waves and such. While fishing screen will go dim on its own. Will not brighten back up for quite a while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from works great on LOW would like more info on which palates are best and are the most common ones used
Date published: 2014-08-19
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dislikes It's a nice uniteTwo things I hate about itIf you forget to save your trail when you first go out, you cannot delete that trail without deleting every saved trail you have. I think that is stupid. Also it only will record ten trailsCan save plenty of routes, but if you make a curve in your route it records a straight line. You could hit something. If I had known these to things before I spent that much money on it I would of put my old lowrance global 1600 on my new boatWish lowrance had a update to fix my dislikes about thie HDS Gen2-8

Humminbird® 688ci HD DI Combo. Get an eye-opening picture of the action below, mapped out in a full-color, HD presentation!

Don't drop a blind line. Wide-coverage DualBeam PLUS™ sonar and Down Imaging™ technology combine to present a clear vision of fishing success on the backlit, 256-color high-definition display. Meanwhile internal GPS ensures you can always find your way back.

Beam Me Up!

DualBeam PLUS Sonar - 2 beams and the best of both worlds! A narrow beam is optimized for bottom and structure detail below your boat, while a wide beam casts a wider net, searching for fish and structure around your boat. View them side-by-side onscreen or combine the images into 1 comprehensive view!

Look Out Below!

Down Imaging Sonar - Provides picture-like images of structure below your boat by combining a traditional down-looking sonar view with side imaging technology. Observe Down Imaging side-by-side on your screen with SwitchFire™ (explained below), or on a 3-way view.

Light a Fire Under Your Boat

SwitchFire - Gives you a real time, customized look below the water's surface with 2 different modes: "Max Mode" and "Clear Mode". Clear Mode filters out noise (suspended particles, etc.) in agitated or shallow (8' or less) water for a clearer image of fish and structure. Max Mode for incredible detail and easy lure monitoring. See cover, structure, fish, even thermoclines and water currents. Keep an eye on your bait or jigging action for the best lure presentation.

Keep Going Back to the Well

GPS track-plotting and chart-plotting made easier than ever before! With push-button simplicity, you'll be able to track GPS speed, mark 2,500 waypoints, chart 45 routes, and mark 20,000 points of interest. Make note of the exact location of those hot spots!

More advanced sonar features:
  • Split Screen Zoom increases the displayed resolution to separate sonar returns that are very close together
  • Split Screen Bottom Lock
  • Wide / Narrow Cone Split Screen separates the sonar data using the two primary user selectable down-looking beams simultaneously in split screen
  • Instant Image Update... the sonar chart updates in real time to show the latest information on the sonar screen
  • Freeze Frame with the ability to mark structure on sonar. Inspect and mark submerged structure, bait fish, and underwater contours with special Sonar Cursor
  • Sonar recording
  • Screen snap shot to memory card
  • Real Time Sonar Window always updates at the fastest rate possible and shows only the returns from the bottom, structure, and fish that are within the transducer beam. Displayed on the right side-adjust the window to narrow, wide or off
  • Selective Fish ID+ interprets sonar returns and displays a fish symbol when very selective requirements are met. When a fish is detected, a fish icon and its depth are displayed above the return. 3 different fish icons represent intensity of the sonar return, and provide an indicator of relative fish size
