Articles & Tips
Do You Have What It Takes To Be A Taxidermist?

If you're a hunter, you probably have an appreciation for taxidermy. And you've probably thought about trying it yourself. You wondered how enjoyable it would be to create beautiful mounts, how difficult the craft would be to master. Is it profitable? We wondered all that, too, so we tracked down one of the nation's premier taxidermy instructors for his take on it.

Scoring A Deer Rack

More and more hunters are interested in how to measure and "officially score" their deer racks. The main recordbooks are Boone and Crockett and Pope & Young. B&C was the first, starting over a century ago, and is the main club for rifle hunters, but allows entries taken by all legal means. It has higher minimum scores than P&Y, which was started about 50-plus years ago for bowhunters. Learn about their scoring procedures.

How To Get A Buck Scored

I've answered this one before, but several writers have asked how to get a deer officially scored, then entered into the record book.

Spring Cleaning Game Mounts

Spring cleaning of game mounts is easy. There won't be any heavy lifting, because you don't even need to take the big stuff down from the walls. And you'll only need basic tools -- clean rags, window cleaner, Sno-seal, cotton swabs, a new hairbrush, and a feather duster. That's it!

Because They Deserve It: Rebuilding Broken Antlers

Many deer hunters across the country long to have a buck that they killed entered into one of the two primary antler scoring organizations' record book's. Many others, however, say "Phooey" when it comes to scoring antlers. They believe the animal deserves credit for everything he is, or was, carrying on his head. I tend to agree. That is one of the main reasons I had Chad Mohr of Gameheads Unlimited Taxidermy reconstruct an antler for me from one of my bucks.
