Dusty time capsule uncovered. If this mighty Mauser® could speak, it would tell about a hardened Turkish soldier's bloody tour of military duty... likely during the Great War conflict (1914-1918). It's possible that this very same Rifle was shouldered, sighted and fired at Allied troops during World War I.
Upgrade for an old warhorse! The Turkish "brass" opted to have these pre-1898 Rifles updated in the 1930s. Originally chambered in 7.65 Mauser® caliber, the firearms were rechambered to accept an 8 mm Mauser® cartridge and restocked to Mauser® 98K style. Rear sight was also changed to Mauser® 98K style. A small cutout on the front receiver ring allowed use of stripper clips with an 8 mm Mauser® cartridge.
Lastly, the year of conversion is stamped on the front receiver ring. All of this was part of a provision that Mauser® would update all existing Turkish Mauser® rifles whenever improvements were made. Choose from two stock variants, both with the 1930's changes: The straight grip stock is a more traditional holdover from the original 1893 Rifle... the design made it easier to grip the Rifle when used in hand-to-hand combat with a bayonet. The Kar-98 semi-pistol grip stock is a more modern update, for easier handling during firing.
