Gun Shot Causes Unusual Antler

Jeff G. from Minnesota writes to ask about a buck he shot. "While hunting on state land in Minnesota last year, my brother shot at a buck and knocked it down only to have it get up and run off. When it ran off, he swore that it had two antlers when he shot, but one when it ran off. The next year I shot a buck on the same state property that had one well-formed side, while on the other side it had a 4-inch antler growing from the typical antler spot to under the deer's eye. Could this be the deer and if so how atypical is this? I'm guessing the impact of the slug altered the growth plate in the deer's skull and caused the malformation?"

Outsmarting Bucks: Move Your Stand

Ed B. from Tennessee writes to ask about deer sightings. "I used to see big bucks on my hunting area, as did my three hunting buddies. But in the past two years, although we see bucks when we scout before the season, buck sightings during the hunting season have dropped significantly. We still hunt the same way we used to, and the stands that were always productive are still being used, so what has happened to our bucks?"
